Museum Poster
& Card
For this project, I was responsible for creating a fictional promotional poster and postcard for the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I was allowed to pick on designer to showcase and I decided to pick Sol Lewitt. This artist was known for creating conceptual and minimalist art post-war.
Research
The idea I was getting when doing research was something that was bright and stands out when walking around. My Pinterest Board consists of different poster designs that are both minimalistic and conceptual to represent Sol Lewitt’s art.
Sketches
For my sketches I created one that is very simple and straight to the point and another that was a little more crowded. I wanted to try both to see what would work best with the information I have collected regarding Sol Lewitt.
Typography
To keep following the minimalist and conceptual style, I decided to go with a typeface that represented that. I explored four different typefaces and really took into account what would work best on print.
Color Swatches
With the design I wanted to include something that was bright and bold. I also wanted to include colors that contrasted off one another to allow it to stand out even more. While researching, I recognized that all of Sol Lewitt’s pieces included that kind of style.
Compositions
I decided to approach my comps in 2 different ways with different features. I knew I wanted to include Sol Lewitt’s artwork on the poster to help attract people’s eye and to help them get excited for the event. I also designed something that was more simple and another that was more busy. With the feedback I have received from my peers, I decided to go a completely different route. I thought that everything was way to busy and that their were way to many colors going on. I also did not like how I made Lewitt’s head coming out at the bottom left part of the page.
Final Poster
After doing some more work and sketches on how to make my poster better, I have decided to go a completely different route. I started over and gave it a more clean and simplistic look. I decided to include more white space and a more simple art piece that Lewitt has created.
Final Postcard
Finally, once I have decided what I wanted my poster to look like, I then started to design my postcard. I created the postcard so that it had the same feel to the poster to keep the brand consistent.
